Spartacus: Blood and Sand

I was drawn to this show when I chanced upon its huge promo poster on my Netflix instant streaming queue. Being a sucker for period dramas, especially those that are serialized and set in Rome or Greece, I thought I'd give it a shot.

The show is three episodes in [airs Fridays on Starz] but, boy, what a let down!

It feels as if the director/producer watched '300' and thought, "Wow! If I give a dusty tinge to the background, throw in stylishly copious amounts of blood, I can make a wafer thin plot look awesome. Oh, and let me try and convince Lucy Lawless to do this."

Also, since this is period drama set in ancient Rome, he seems to have thought up all the sexually-charged stereotypes possible, magnified it several-fold, and indulged in showing computer-generated blood-spillage painting modern art on the screen -- just so it looks '300'-like.

Just think '300' on steroids -- the kind that makes you look good, but eventually is bound to be your undoing -- seasoned with the worst dialogues of 'Gladiator'. And you have this abomination.

But since I am currently on the look out for guilty pleasure television, I might actually watch this while gritting my teeth through some godawful conversations that are supposed to pass for 'dialogues'.
